The Best Free Outdoor Gyms and Fitness Circuits in the Area
Beijing residents use public park equipment to maintain fitness routines without gym fees.
How we reported this
Beijing maintains more than 1,200 free outdoor fitness stations across its public parks as of July 2026.
City health data shows rising interest in these spots during summer months when indoor facilities face higher demand and temperatures climb above 30 degrees Celsius. Residents in central districts turn to these installations for strength training and circuit work that requires no membership or payment.
Equipment at Ritan Park and Chaoyang Park
Ritan Park in the Chaoyang district features a line of pull-up bars, dip stations and leg press machines along the path from the east gate near Ritan Road. The setup sits within walking distance of the Sanlitun embassy area and opens at 6 a.m. daily. Chaoyang Park, further east on Chaoyang Park South Road, holds a longer circuit of 15 stations that includes balance beams, rowing simulators and shoulder press units around the main lake perimeter. Both locations receive regular inspections from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Parks and Forests.
Equipment at these sites was added or upgraded during a 2025 citywide program that placed 300 new pieces across 40 parks. Visitors report the stations stay in working order through most weeks, though occasional closures occur for repairs.
Current usage data and access steps
The Beijing Sports Bureau recorded 2.5 million visits to public fitness stations in the first half of 2026, an 18 percent increase from the same period in 2025. No entry fees apply at either Ritan or Chaoyang Park, though users must bring their own water and towels. Morning hours before 9 a.m. draw the largest crowds on weekdays.
Check the Beijing Parks mobile app for same-day maintenance notices before travel. Arrive early at either site to complete a full circuit and avoid peak afternoon heat.
