Beijing Youth Sports Participation Surges in Schools and Communities
Recent figures on school competitions and family events point to sustained local involvement in youth fitness activities.
How we reported this
Beijing hosted the 2026 Happy Run International Youth and Family Sports Carnival in June 2026, drawing nearly 600 participants that included children of diplomats from 33 embassies along with local youth.
School-Based Events Record High Match Counts
In the first half of 2025, 99.7 percent of primary and secondary schools in Beijing organised class-based competitions. These events produced 194,000 matches and roughly 5 million student participations. The scale of these numbers indicates that regular physical activity is built into the weekly routine for most students across the city.
Family and Diplomatic Events Add to Local Reach
The June 2026 carnival at the city level brought together families and embassy communities for a single-day running event. Similar gatherings have been held in recent years to encourage broader involvement beyond school hours. Officials have also supported winter sports camps that trained 120 students aged 10 to 14 in figure skating, speed skating, skiing and snowboarding during December 2025.
Three-Ball Competitions Track Team Numbers
The 2025 Run for Youth Li Ning Cup Beijing Youth Three-Ball Open registered 1,369 football teams and 18,094 total participants across under-6 to under-18 age groups. These figures cover football, basketball and volleyball and show steady registration in traditional team sports alongside newer activities such as rock climbing and BMX.
Programs such as the Baidui Cup youth football tournament, now in its fifth decade, continue to operate each year. Training sites including the Aozhong Ice Sports Center have hosted specialised camps that introduce students to Olympic winter sports. Together these efforts maintain a pattern of organised participation that extends from classrooms to community venues.
City programs are expected to keep running class competitions and multi-sport carnivals in the coming months, giving families and schools ongoing options for structured physical activity.
